African Diaspora Association of the Maritimes Holds Year-End Gathering
On December 17, this year, the African Diaspora Association of the Maritimes (ADAM) convened for its year-end activity. This marked the first meeting in months, as the association has been grappling with some internal challenges, hindering its regular operations.
Adam was founded in 2006 with a mission to encourage and foster successful participation and integration of the African Canadian Diaspora in the educational, social, political, civic, and economic activities in Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. But the challenges faced by the organization reflect broader issues that have impeded the effective functioning of the association, prompting the need for a concerted effort to bridge gaps and foster a stronger sense of community.
The year-end gathering served as an opportunity for the current leadership to make a plea to its members and all people of African descent in Nova Scotia, to set aside differences and collectively move forward. The theme of the meeting, "One Adam, One Africa," underscored the importance of unity among the diverse members of the association.
During the event, leaders and members alike expressed the significance of transcending internal disputes to focus on common goals and aspirations that bind the African diaspora in the Maritimes. Some of the people who spoke emphasized the shared heritage and collective identity that unite the diaspora. Participants also engaged in open dialogue, sharing their perspectives and grievances, with the aim of fostering understanding and healing within the community.
Moving into the new year, the association hopes to implement strategies to address the root causes of internal discord, ensuring a more harmonious and effective platform for the diverse members of the African diaspora in the Maritimes.
