Community Voices: Raising Children & Navigating School Life

In this episode, Lori Hull, a parent of 4 children, shares her valuable insights on the challenges and triumphs of raising children and navigating the intricacies of school life. This back-to-school edition of the show provided a platform for viewers to gain a deeper understanding of some of the complexities parents face while guiding their children through the educational journey.

Hull delved into various aspects of parenting and school life, offering practical tips and heartfelt anecdotes. Hull attributes her children's upbringing to her and her husband's intentional parenting, which she believes shaped their outcomes. “We believe our children are giving to us. So it’s a stewardship, and there would be accountability” she says.

Hull emphasized the importance of creating a conducive home environment while raising kids. “A home should be clean and calm. A place they can be celebrated and feel comfortable in,” Hull said. “I want them to feel the most secure at home,” she added.

Children tend to look up to role models and significant adults in their lives, especially their parents and caregivers. They observe and internalize the behaviors and values exhibited by these individuals. Research and studies in child development have consistently shown that children tend to learn more from what they see and experience compared to what they hear. This concept is often referred to as observational learning or social learning theory, which was popularized by psychologist Albert Bandura. "I can't expect my children to adhere to a standard different from the one I hold myself to," Hull emphasized, while offering advice to other parents on being role models for their children.

Homeschooling was another topic that arose during the interview, and Hull shared her personal experience with it. Many parents believe that homeschooling provides the flexibility to choose or design a curriculum that aligns with the family's values, educational goals, and the child's learning style. "We tried it and we liked it. The kids liked it. We appreciated the lifestyle it afforded us," Hull said.

In conclusion, Lori Hull's appearance on the Community Update proved to be a valuable resource for parents seeking guidance in the challenging journey of raising children and navigating school life.
