Councillors Want More Publicity For Richmond Boundary Hearings
ARICHAT - As the mid-February deadline looms for Richmond Municipal Council to make its final submission to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (NSUARB) regarding the municipality's preferred number of councillors and its new municipal boundary layout, some councillors are already concerned that the word is not getting out to everybody who needs to be a part of public consultations on this issue.
During Monday's meeting of Council's Committee of the Whole, Isle Madame councillors Michael Diggdon and Shawn Samson expressed concern that the municipality is not using all possible channels to promote open houses on residents' preferred municipal boundaries and whether they feel the current complement of five councillors is sufficient or whether that number should be expanded to seven.
Samson, who held an open house on these issues at the New Horizons for Seniors Club in Arichat this past Saturday afternoon, said he is receiving multiple concerns that the online survey designed to gather public opinion on these issues is not user-friendly.
"Some people don't have internet, and there are questions about whether we should have mailed this survey out in the mail," Samson reported.
"Of the 20 residents that showed up at our last [open house], maybe four of them do Facebook," Diggdon chimed in, referring to a gathering that took place this past Sunday afternoon at the Janvrin's Island Community Centre.
With follow-up open houses on this topic slated to take place this Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 1-3 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Grand Anse and this Sunday, January 15, at 2:30 p.m. at the D'Escousse Civic Improvement Centre, Richmond's Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Troy MacCulloch stressed the importance of councillors getting residents' feedback before council makes its final decisions on this issue during the next regular council meeting, slated for January 23.
"You would have to make your decision then to be able to send your application [to the NSUARB] by February," MacCulloch pointed out.
