On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Manitoba's Sudanese community organized a fundraiser dinner at the Grand Mosque in Winnipeg to help children's hospitals and dialysis clinics in Sudan. The ongoing war in their home country has significantly impacted access to medical supplies, treatments and basic needs.

President of the Community of the Sudanese Canadians in Manitoba (CSCM), Abubakar Alkhalifa, spoke to U Multicultural journalist Zuher Almusre and explained that the ongoing conflict is causing significant delays in medical treatments. For those with kidney disease, these delays could be fatal.

"We are organizing this campaign in solidarity with our brothers in Sudan, and we are looking forward to saving more than 12,000 people who may die if they are not able to do dialysis within four days. The Sudanese are going through difficult times and fear for their lives when leaving their homes."

Supporters of the fundraiser had the opportunity to try four different Sudanese dishes. Kawser Ali, an event organizer, said the fundraiser is an opportunity to unite the community and support those in need while sharing Sudanese culture and food with Winnipeggers.

Ali added the event would not have been possible without the support of Winnipeg's Arab community. "To the Arab community who participated with us and helped us in our campaign, we must extend our sincere thanks."

Children and youth were also encouraged to participate in the event. For many in the community, it was an opportunity to teach them the importance of assisting those in need.
