Elon Musk Owns Twitter, Now What?: A Discussion on Free Speech and Taxation

The group 4GetAboutIt is a TV/Radio show hosted by the youth at Regent Park lead by the Focus Media Arts Centre. The youth who work on this project are all Regent Park residents, the themes of their programs represent the perspective of young people from the community - giving a voice to youth from the area allows them delve into the nature of civic engagement and political analysis. In this episode, the hosts; Saima Islam, Daiem Mohammad, and Samir Abdella, collectively discuss Twitter’s owner Elon Musk, the news around freedom of speech, along with Canadian Taxes.
The conversation begins when Samir asks the group if they know about Elon Musk’s new full ownership of Twitter. Twitter has had strict policies where people have been banned for posting content. Everyone seems to be looking forward to seeing what new features are going to be on the app. They hope to have more freedom to upload the videos, pictures, and statements they like.
Saima then says she found out about the Oscars and the Will Smith incident just from scrolling on the app. Host Daiem and Samir then continue to discuss on how no one at home really sits down and watches the news anymore. The app allows people to catch up to news sooner than they would on TV.
Daiem then goes onto say, people should watch the news for more political things like the crimes in your neighbourhood perhaps. Your neighbour five doors down just got shot, and without the news on the TV, you wouldn’t have heard it.
Samir gives another example, when there’s a fatal car crash in Brampton, some drivers might feel that they should be more aware of their driving on the road.
Samir transitions the topic to Canadian taxes claiming the rich gets too much and the low get too little, the highest tax bracket is 48 and 50, wealthier people with an absurd amount of money being taxed more isn’t being understood. Daiem then says, if I were wealthy I would have no issue giving away most of my money if that meant the average person was doing better. Free universities, free healthcare, and less expensive housing would seem more beneficial for all types of people with their different financial situations.
