Emergency Repair Costs at Waste Water Treatment Plant Have Increased Dramatically

Council Meeting Addresses Key Financial, Infrastructure, and Community Matters

At its latest meeting, Council reviewed a range of financial approvals, infrastructure improvements, and community events. The agenda was approved with minor changes, and the minutes from the previous meeting were accepted.

Financial Approvals and Infrastructure Investments

Council approved several expenditures, including:

• $1,520 for maintaining signage at Schreiber Beach and the Casque Isle hiking trail.
• $3,121.91 in unpaid property taxes, which will be written off.
• $5,295.80 for water treatment spare parts and $2,990.76 for sludge pump valves.
• $5,480 for repairs to a town dump truck.
• $45,548.72 in ratified bank debits for November 2024.

Council also finalized attendance at the Good Roads Conference and the Thunder Bay District Municipal League Conference for its members.

Given the increase in late property tax payments due to rising costs, an amendment was passed to extend tax payment deadlines. However, residents were reminded of the penalties associated with late payments.

Winter Carnival and Community Initiatives

Plans for the upcoming Winter Carnival were reviewed, with adjustments made to the schedule to maximize event time. Budget considerations and sponsorship opportunities were also discussed.

Council approved a senior center event featuring a CCR tribute band and reviewed a request to replace the center’s aging pool table to serve its members better.

Wastewater System Repairs and Emergency Status

A major topic of discussion was the state of emergency at the wastewater treatment plant. The cost of repairs has now exceeded initial estimates, reaching $650,000. Council expressed concern over the unexpected financial burden and discussed potential strategies to manage the increased expenses.

Upcoming Meetings and Community Impact Discussions

A February 4 meeting with bank representatives has been scheduled to address the upcoming local branch closure and its impact on the community. Additionally, a public meeting on February 12 will allow residents to share feedback and explore possible solutions.

Following these discussions, Council moved into a closed session to finalize financial planning matters.
