Guiding Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) in Neepawa: Manitoba’s Pathway to Licensure
Neepawa Hosts Information Session for Internationally Educated Nurses
The Town of Neepawa, in partnership with Neepawa Settlement and Westlake Employment, hosted an Information Session on March 18, 2025, to provide guidance on the Manitoba Government’s Program for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs). The session aimed to help IENs understand their pathway to licensure, outlining both the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Registered Nurse (RN) certification processes. By offering clear information and expert guidance, the session sought to address common challenges faced by internationally trained nurses looking to establish their careers in Manitoba.
Anna Panganiban, Project Lead at the Healthcare Retention and Recruitment Office, played a key role in the event, sharing insights into how her office supports IENs throughout their licensure journey. She provided an in-depth overview of the Manitoba Nursing Licensure Process, explaining the steps involved, from credential assessment to completing the licensure exam.
“The Manitoba IEN Program has been in place for several years now,” Panganiban explained. “It’s a provincial initiative designed to support IENs in achieving their goal of working in Manitoba’s nursing sector. This includes guidance through the licensure process, which can be complex and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why we have employment navigators available to assist, ensuring that nurses feel supported every step of the way.”
In addition to outlining the licensure requirements, Panganiban emphasized the growing demand for nurses in the region and the various opportunities available to IENs once they obtain their credentials. She also highlighted the role of community and employer support in helping internationally trained nurses integrate successfully into the workforce.
Following the presentation, attendees participated in a dynamic Q&A session, engaging in discussions about various aspects of the licensure process. Many inquiries focused on eligibility requirements related to immigration status, as well as details regarding government grants and financial assistance programs available to help cover training and examination costs. The session provided valuable clarification on these topics, ensuring that participants left with a better understanding of their next steps.
With the new Neepawa Hospital set to open in 2026 or early 2027, initiatives like this session play a crucial role in attracting and supporting nurses within the community. By equipping internationally educated nurses with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate the licensure process, Neepawa continues to strengthen its healthcare sector and improve access to quality care for residents.
