Halifax’s Igbo Community Celebrates the New Yam Festival

The New Yam Festival, a deeply rooted cultural tradition of the Igbo people from Eastern Nigeria, is being joyfully celebrated by the Indigbo Cultural Association in Halifax. This annual festival, which symbolizes the end of the farming season and the bountiful harvest of yams, is a time for thanksgiving, communal feasting, and vibrant displays of cultural heritage. Since its introduction in Halifax in 2021, the New Yam Festival has steadily grown in significance and scale. Jayanti Jakka, Chairperson of this year’s planning committee, explained that the event has become an essential fixture in the cultural calendar for the Igbo community in Halifax. "The festival has evolved into a major gathering where our community not only celebrates but also educates younger generations about the traditions and values that define our heritage," Jakka noted. She emphasized that passing down these cultural practices to younger members is crucial for preserving the community’s identity in Canada.

This year’s festival promises an array of engaging activities and traditional displays, making it a highlight for both participants and attendees. The event will feature cultural performances, including traditional dances by children, music, and storytelling sessions that showcase the folklore of the Igbo people.
