LaSalle Intends to Improve Road Safety Near Schools

In LaSalle's most recent council meeting, the improvement of road safety was stressed upon, especially in areas where schools are located, as there have been cases reported to LaSalle's council regarding excessive speeding, which posed a danger to pedestrians, in particular children.

LaSalle's council stated the number of speeding complaints in 2021 made towards the council would tallied and released to the public. They also stated the traffic committee will only be able to submit requests to the borough council regarding changes within approximately one month. No casualties were announced due to speeding and road safety, but the council intends to improve road safety for both pedestrians and drivers for 2022. 

Community members of LaSalle voiced concern over road safety and even recommended solutions, as some requested speed bumps to slow drivers and modified mufflers to reduce sound in the neighbourhood. Some requested if the council could provide shelters for cars during the winter.

LaSalle will also be constructing a new park in the neighbourhood. This park will honour Chinese-Montrealers in LaSalle, as a name is being decided upon. Chinese-Montrealers contribute to a large population in LaSalle. According to the 2016 census, there were more than 3,250 LaSalle residents of Chinese origin. This was 4.2% of the general population and 8.1% of the immigrant population. Mandarin and Cantonese were ranked fourth in languages ​​spoken at home, following French, English and Italian.

Public recreation was recognized as an essential service to socio-economic and cultural developments of communities, as it was stated to be important for both the mental health and physical health of community members in LaSalle. 

Councillors offered condolences to the families of both Sylvie Pilon and Christine Comtois who recently passed away. The reasoning of their death was not disclosed during the meeting.
