Today on the Face to Face, we shine a light on the often-overlooked financial barriers that keep many children from participating in organized sports. Chris Wilson and his team at KidSport Tri-Cities are tackling this head-on.
With a steadfast belief that every child deserves the chance to play, regardless of their family’s income, KidSport provides financial assistance to families, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation.
Each year, the organization helps children across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody access the sports they love.“It’s about more than just physical activity,” Wilson explains. “It’s about building confidence, friendships, leadership, and a sense of belonging.”
Eligibility is simple: families in financial need can apply online through a straightforward, respectful process. Funding comes from a blend of community donations, local sponsorships, and fundraising events. But demand continues to grow, and with it, the need for more community support. Wilson says one of their biggest challenges is awareness, not just among families who could benefit, but among potential donors who may not realize how far even a small contribution can go.
Businesses, service and individuals all play a role in expanding KidSport’s impact. Looking ahead, Wilson’s goal is ambitious: to keep increasing the number of kids supported annually, eliminate waitlists, and ensure that every child in the Tri-Cities has the opportunity to benefit from the life-changing power of sport. In a time when the cost of living is rising and opportunities for connection are more vital than ever, KidSport Tri-Cities reminds us that community isn’t just a place, it’s something we build together, one child at a time.
