Life, Resilience, and Strength Celebrated At The 9th Annual Earl Cook Classic Hockey Game
The 9th annual Earl Cook is a friendly game between Youth-in-care and Social Workers and Adult supporters, to celebrate the life, resilience and strength of Youth in Care. The game was named for a young person Earl Henry Cook (1988- 2011) who died of cancer while in care. It is intended to celebrate the resiliency and strength he showed during his life and all those who are in care or finding their way after aging out of the system.
Journalist Zuher Almusre from U multicultural channel spoke with Marie Christian, Program Director, Voices: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network, Winnipeg. He asked her about the program's history and its role in helping Winnipeg youth. Marie said that Voices: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network empowers by advocating for youth in and from care to become actively involved in making decisions that affect their lives. She says that they represent youth in and from care across Manitoba, promote opportunities for youth to speak out and have a voice, and they offer support and understanding for youth who are leaving care.”
In this episode from “Civic Platform” Zuher also spoke with Jainna Cabral, Program Coordinator, Voices: Manitoba’s Youth in Care Network. Jainna said that on this day we provide all the tools that the participants need to be able to play in this friendly hockey match. We aim to build a network, communication, and new friendships among the participants. Jainna added that the organizations welcomes all children and young people from any cultural background. Their goal is to help everyone and to raise the level of children in care.
