Marching for Palestine: Calls for Justice Ahead of Nakba Commemoration

On Sunday, May 11, nearly 200 people gathered in downtown Montreal for a pro-Palestine protest, calling for international action in response to ongoing violence and humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The demonstration occurred just days before Nakba Day, observed annually on May 15 to mark the 1948 displacement of Palestinians. Protesters emphasized that the current crisis is part of a longer history of occupation and oppression, not a recent development.

Participants marched through the city’s core, holding Palestinian flags, signs, and banners. Chants and speeches addressed the urgent need for global intervention and continued public pressure. Organizers urged attendees to remain vocal, persistent, and present in support of Palestinian lives.

One speaker addressed the crowd with the story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza along with several members of her family and two paramedics. The speaker referenced Hind’s death as an example of the broader impact of the conflict on civilians, particularly children, and used the incident to question the lack of international response. The speaker pointed to what they described as widespread silence and inaction from both global leaders and the public.

Protesters called on governments and institutions to uphold international law and to take steps toward ending what they referred to as the ongoing siege and collective punishment of Gaza. Several speakers framed the protest as part of a growing global movement demanding justice, accountability, and long-term solutions rooted in human rights.
