Melodic Diversity: ANSMA's Impact on Junos Showcases in Halifax
In celebration of Black History Month, Community Update presents an exclusive interview with Julien Matwawana, the Executive Director of the African Nova Scotian Music Association (ANSMA). ANSMA stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for black musicians in Nova Scotia, fostering a vibrant community of artistic expression and cultural celebration.
Matwawana shares insights into the origins of ANSMA, which emerged from a collective desire among community members to address the lack of representation and opportunities for African Nova Scotian artists in mainstream music circles. Recognizing the need for change, they founded ANSMA as a platform "for us, by us," dedicated to showcasing the diverse talents within the community.
Over the years, ANSMA has organized flagship events like the Black Vibe Showcase, held biannually during Nova Scotia Music Week and the East Coast Music Awards. Additionally, ANSMA has forged partnerships with organizations such as Music Nova Scotia and the Halifax Junos Host Committee, advocating for diversity and inclusion within the music industry.
One of ANSMA's primary objectives is to empower African Nova Scotian artists through development programs and workshops and Matwawana emphasizes the importance of equipping artists with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the industry professionally, ensuring they are prepared for performance opportunities and industry roles.
As Halifax prepares to host the Juno Awards, ANSMA is actively involved in highlighting the rich cultural heritage of African Nova Scotians within the music industry. Through strategic initiatives and collaborations, ANSMA aims to ensure the representation of local talent at key events and ceremonies, including the Juno Fest and red carpet showcases.
As Black History Month unfolds, ANSMA continues to stand at the forefront of empowering and celebrating black musicians in Nova Scotia. With a commitment to fostering talent and promoting diversity, ANSMA remains dedicated to shaping a future where African Nova Scotian artists thrive and excel on both local and international stages.
