Minister Responsible For Seniors Announces Major Funding Initiatives
The Honourable Kathy Bockus, the Minister Responsible for Seniors and MLA for St. Croix, announced over $224,000 in funding from the province for the Charlotte County Seniors Resource Centre. Minister Bockus made the announcement at an event showcasing the results of a Healthy Seniors Pilot Project in Saint Andrews, which took place at the WC O'Neill Arena.
The resource centre will be located in the Saint Andrews Wellness Centre and will have one full-time staff member and one part-time staff member who will aid seniors with a range of needs when it comes to finding resources that will help them stay in their homes longer.
On top of this announcement, Bockus also announced that the New Brunswick government's Nursing Homes Without Walls program has expanded its services to fourteen nursing homes across the province, aiming to enhance support for seniors living in their own homes. The initiative, initially introduced as a pilot project in 2019 and later incorporated into the provincial health plan, now includes these fourteen nursing homes. Social Development's call for applications last year led to their inclusion, and an additional six facilities are expected to join the program by year-end. This extension is a result of collaborative efforts with Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Université de Moncton’s Research Centre on Aging. Some sites have already started offering services, while others are preparing to launch in the coming months.
The Nursing Homes Without Walls program seeks to improve access to health and social services for elderly individuals residing in their homes. Services provided include assistance in accessing various programs, check-in calls, transportation to medical appointments, and involvement in intergenerational activities. Health Minister Bruce Fitch emphasized the importance of the program, emphasizing its role in supporting seniors to live independently, aligning with the provincial health plan's objectives.
The current participating nursing homes are:
Manoir Edith B. Pinet (Paquetville)
Westford Nursing Home (Port Elgin)
Résidences Inkerman (Inkerman)
Résidences Lucien Saindon (Lamèque)
Loch Lomond Villa (Saint John)

Dr. V.A. Snow Centre (Hampton)
Shannex Embassy Hall, Shannex Tucker Hall, Shannex Cohen Hall (Quispamsis and Saint John)

The program's expansion is geared at enabling seniors to age in place while maintaining their independence and quality of life.
