Montreal Takes Engagement to Make City More Accessible and Inclusive

To conclude their series of consultations and council meetings in collaboration with the Commission du transport et des travaux publics, the city of Montreal held one last public consultation of their La traversée des rues, mesures d'accessibilité universelle et mobilité active series.

The objective of the meeting was to present the adoption of the recommendations that had been made by citizens and organizations alike, throughout the last four months, as well as to ensure the best deployment of those measures to ensure universal accessibility that promotes safe road/street crossing and a better inclusivity for individuals with disabilities, and elders.

The recommendations presented came after the Commission sur le transport et les travaux publics met at three separate times to analyze the suggested recommendations and opinions, and elaborations on them.

Many points were highlighted by organizations and citizens that stood out to the members of the Commission.

The improvement of audio-signal traffic lights was one of the most recommended points. Citizens demanded that they be better deployed and maintained as to enhance the ease of mobility, the comfort and safety of Montrealers.

Another point the Commission noticed that was brought up often is the necessity for a sharing of the road, requiring urban planning and development that promotes active mobility.

Montrealers also put emphasis on the necessity for the maintenance of active and ongoing accessibility during road works in summer, and harsher temperatures in winter.

For these recommendations to be implemented, the Commission recommended that the city of Montreal allocate the needed resources for a team specifically dedicated to universal accessibility that can advise the city on urban planning around Montreal to make sure it actively promotes active mobility.
