COVID-19 rules at Canada's borders are set to be dropped on October 1. Travelers entering Canada will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination, and use of the ArriveCAN app will be optional. There will no longer be any pre-arrival or on-arrival testing requirements regardless of your means of travel, and plane and train passengers will no longer have to wear a mask. This change, which was announced on Monday, comes after reports of ArriveCAN complications delaying disaster relief help coming from the US for Hurricane Fiona.. For bordertown residents looking to enter the US with more ease, keep in mind that proof of vaccination is still required by the United States government in order to enter the US.

St. Croix MLA Kathy Bockus and New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson held a joint ceremony with special guest Lieutenant Governor the Honourable Brenda Murphy at the Garcelon Civic Centre on Saturday to honour 25 outstanding members of the southwest New Brunswick community with a Queen's Platinum Jubilee medal. The medal took on added significance following the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the II just two weeks ago. Each MLA in the province has the ability to honour 20 recipients with this special award marking their service to their respective community, and each MP nominates 5 individuals. Patrick Watt and I were humbled to be included in the recipients for our work at CHCO alongside some of our most beloved neighbours and friends who make our part of the world such a special place to call home.

In other medal ceremony news, Sara Ross of St. George recently took home the silver medal for Canada at the World Masters Floor Hockey Competition in the Czech Republic. Ross is no stranger to medaling as she already has three gold medals from the Masters under her belt for Team Canada and looks forward to competing again next year when the Masters are held in Las Vegas.

The Wesley United Church in St. Andrews held an affirming ceremony on Sunday to officially recognize the church as a place where all are welcome regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. The affirming ceremony makes public the values Wesley holds so that people looking for an inclusive place of worship can locate Wesley with more ease.

Finally, a surprise retirement tribute for Fire Chief Steve Smith recently took place at the Moore's Mill Fire Hall. Smith handed over the reigns after 36 years to his successor Jonathan McCaffrey. Fire chiefs from departments throughout Charlotte County attended and shared stories of Smith from the past four decades.
