Newcomers Use Art to Connect With Community
The influx of Filipino Immigrants in Neepawa and surrounding areas added to the vibrancy and culture of the community. Through ArtsForward, the center of arts & culture in Neepawa, two Filipino artists, Clemente Villamayor Jr. and Robert Garcia were able to showcase Filipino culture and traditions through their works and share their journey from the Philippines to Canada. They both also donated their time and talent to produce public art to enhance life in Neepawa.
Clemente Villamayor Jr. is a Filipino-Canadian artist from Rizal, Philippines who now lives in Carberry, Manitoba. He has a variety of works which include his paintings, a 3D version of houses in slum areas in the Philippines and a painting of a “Jeepney” which is the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. He also shared his views about preserving the Filipino culture and values and the importance of valuing Canada as their new home that gave a better future for their family.
The other Filipino artist is Robert Garcia from Davao City, Philippines who now lives in Minnedosa, Manitoba. He shared his struggles as an artist in the Philippines and is thankful for the opportunity he was given here in Canada to be able to pursue his passion in Arts. His paintings are mostly about scenic views and landscapes in Manitoba. But a distinct one that he made was his painting in 2021 to pay tribute to 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines which was presented to St. Dominic’s Church in Neepawa on March 21st 2021.
These two artists remind us of the importance of reconnecting to our roots, preserving our values and traditions while we move forward to the future in our new home country, Canada.

As Neepawa and area’s local access television station, NACTV has been serving the community since 1977. The station is a community-owned not-for-profit organisation that broadcasts 24 hours a day and reaches homes throughout Manitoba and Canada on Bell ExpressVu 592, MTS Channel 30/1030, and WCG 117 as well as streaming online at nactv.tv.
NACTV’s content is primarily filmed and produced by local volunteers and focuses on issues, activities, achievements, sports, and news by, about, and of interest to our community.
Neepawa is located in western Manitoba, about two hours west of Winnipeg and 45 minutes southeast of Riding Mountain National Park.
