Outgoing Mulgrave CAO Excited About Town's Future
MULGRAVE - She may be vacating her office at Mulgrave Memorial Centre (MMC) at the end of the month, but Mulgrave's outgoing Chief Administrative Officer, Darlene Bertheir-Sampson, is still buzzing about the success stories she has seen in the town during her 18 months as the town's top non-elected official.
Berthier-Sampson confirmed earlier this fall that she will leave her CAO's position at the end of the month - a decision she does not take lightly, given the strong bond she has formed with Mulgrave's Town Council both before and after last month's municipal elections.
"I can personally say that I've fallen in love with the people of Mulgrave," Berthier-Sampson told TELILE 24/7 host Adam Cooke in an interview just outside her office at the former Mulgrave Memorial Education Centre (MMEC), now known simply as MMC.
"I've never been anywhere with such a community spirit, where people are pulling in the same direction, and I couldn't be more proud to have served in such a fantastic town."
Chief among the town's successes is the evolution of its former school building into a multipurpose centre that now hosts the town offices and its recreation department, as well as $4,000 worth of rentals and the Scotia Cafe, run by Mulgrave Deputy Mayor Tanya Snow-Keeling and a host of volunteers.
The building is also hosting one-day rentals for instructional seminars, conferences and sports tournaments, and it is saving the town money on heating and electrical costs since Mulgrave officials worked out a deal with the DSM fish-oil processing plant to provide biofuel compounds to use as a replacement for heating oil.
Today, as newly-elected Mulgrave Mayor Ron Chisholm works with a new town council that includes second-term councilors Snow-Keeling and Bob Russell, as well as newcomers Krista Luddington and Crystal Durling, Bertheir-Sampson is confident that the growth will continue well after she finishes her time as CAO on November 30.
"They're excited, and they're the right people for the job - I can't wait to see what they do," Berthier-Sampson beamed.
