Schreiber Finalizes Plans for Summer Events
The Schreiber Media Centre recently revamped its coverage of Schreiber council meetings, earning praise from Councillor Dan McGrath. He noted that more people are now watching the SMC coverage than the live Zoom events. Since Schreiber no longer uploads to YouTube, the media centre's content has become crucial for residents unable to watch live meetings. Improved picture and sound quality were also appreciated.
This week's meeting began with a land acknowledgement and approval of the updated agenda and previous meeting minutes. A new bylaw for pickleball day passes, including a user fee, was passed 3-1 despite Councillor Mauro's opposition. The Canada Day and Heritage Day celebration plans were approved, though concerns about the Heritage Day budget and unconfirmed events were noted. A finalized plan will be presented at the next meeting.
A donation to the NOS health care group was approved, along with all accounts for payment and debit orders.
Other business included extending the dental office lease at the medical clinic for ten years at the same rental cost, which was approved to support the new free dental care program. The Council recognized the benefits of maintaining a full medical and dental clinic in town to attract new residents.
In the Committee of the Whole portion, the Director of Operations reported on a recent boil water advisory due to a pump failure at the water plant, which was resolved in five days. Issues at the sewage plant and modifications to the splash pad schedule to reduce water consumption were also discussed. The availability of garbage bag tags and dump pass cards during off hours was raised, along with the need for duct cleaning at the medical centre.
Brush clearing on Isbester Drive is scheduled to improve safety and aesthetics. Special projects financing highlighted spending on signage and grant availability, with the Economic Development Committee suggesting to finalize the signs' locations. The CAO proposed digitizing past records for easier access.
The Recreation Programmer reported on road closures for Canada Day activities and plans for a kids' teddy bear picnic at the end of July. The library reported recent accreditation and the placement of a new sign.
The OCWA report addressed ongoing issues and fixes at the water plant and sewer system, with some updates completed. Councillor McGrath summarized the NOMA "Time to Grow" report, a regional economic plan for Northwestern Ontario. A donation to the Lighthouse Festival in Terrace Bay and corsages for high school graduates were approved.
Unfinished business included additional changes to the social media policy. The meeting concluded with an in-camera session to finalize earlier agenda items.
