Talena Farrell Champions Civic Wellness and Compassion: Faces Tri-Cities Co-Author Series
Cathy Cena & Geneviève Kyle-Lefebvre After the launch of the Faces: Tri-Cities Co-Authored Stories book, created in honour of International Women’s Day, Genevieve Kyle-Lefebvre and Cathy Cena sat down with Talena Farrell as part of a special interview series celebrating the civic impact of the inspiring women featured in the publication. A personal trainer, author, and passionate advocate, Talena shared how her personal journey became a powerful tool for healing and civic engagement. “When we open up and share our stories, we give others permission to rise,” she said.
“That’s how change begins, through connection and courage.” Talena’s quote in the book, “Things don’t always happen when you’re ready. Some things happen when it’s time,” reflects her resilience following the sudden loss of her husband over eight years ago. That moment pushed her to rebuild her life through movement and mindfulness, eventually leading to her book Just a Pretty Mess and an online platform that guides others toward self-confidence and emotional strength. Her vision of wellness goes far beyond the personal. Talena co-founded Footprints of Kindness after witnessing a woman walking barefoot in Vancouver.
What began as a spontaneous act of compassion has grown into an initiative that collects and distributes shoes to women in need across both the Downtown Eastside and the Tri-Cities. In every chapter of her life, Talena models what civic involvement can look like: mentoring women, advocating for accessible wellness programs, and uplifting others through story and service. Her presence in this project reminds us that being an engaged citizen doesn’t always mean holding office. It can mean showing up for your neighbours, leading by example, and making kindness visible. For Talena Farrell, civic engagement starts with empathy and grows through everyday acts of leadership. Her story invites all of us to step forward, share more boldly, and strengthen the community we’re proud to call home.
