Climate Action Group Calls for Change in UCPR
In the latest episode of Insight, join Bruce de la Cruz as he speaks with Lisa Deacon, a member of the UCPR Coalition for Climate Action, and how they plan to create a lasting effect in the UCPR in the fight against climate change.
The group had sent out a press release to all the municipalities of the UCPR, calling for a region wide Climate Action Plan. Lisa describes a climate action plan as a step by step process on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an area.
There are five steps to the process, with the first being taking an emission inventory. That involves seeing how much the city as a corporation, and how each individual person is creating greenhouse gasses and how much of it.
Next is creating a target. This involves lots of back and forth with the community who have a full say in what they do and don’t want as solutions to greenhouse gas emissions.
Next would be formulating a timeline to implement said targets, and after that would be implementing the targets.
Finally, the last step is monitoring the emissions after everything has been set in motion.
When asked what would happen if the community chooses not to implement an action plan, Lisa says that there isn’t a good enough reason to not have a plan. But if it were to fall through, then each municipality could push for their own plan, as opposed to a county wide approach, although the former would be more efficient.
Lisa concludes by saying that fighting climate change starts with people that care enough to do something about it, with calling your local MP the easiest thing you can do.
