Meet the Candidates : Konstantine Malakos (NDP)
For the final push ahead of the 2021 Federal Election, TVC22 brings you one-on-one interview with your local candidates in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell.
In this interview, host Thomas Stockting sits down with NDP candidate Mr. Konstantine Malakos, who was the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell representative for the NDP in 2019 receiving 10.4% of the popular vote. A self-described "working class man" Mr. Malakos is campaigning on giving the average person further representation in government as he aims to put "more in the pocket" of the average person & family.
Discussing his priorities during this sit down at TVC22's studio, Mr. Malakos spoke passionately about child care, affordability issues surrounding housing, the environmental crisis and all round giving the residents of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell easier lives.
With the NDP promising to "build over 500,000 units of affordable housing" is elected, Mr. Malakos know 'Rome wasn't built in a day'.
"Half will be built within five years," he said. "We know that isn't fast enough but it takes time, we are being transparent about that.
"In the short term we are proposing rent subsidies."
The NDP aim to ensure that no-one has to spend more than 30% of their monthly income on the rent. With all the social projects proposed comes a great cost and Mr. Malakos is confident that the NDP can make the numbers match up as they aim to tax those with the greatest wealth in society.
"If you are the average citizen, even on the higher end of the spectrum, your taxes aren't going to change," he explained.
"It will only affect those with $10m in cash or assets. We are going to do that because it is the right thing to do.
"The Liberals have rejected the wealth tax which is why they can't afford to put in place all their programs. They chose to priorities their friends."
