Schreiber Council Meeting for October 2021

The first council meeting for October was a rather quick affair lasting just over 30 minutes. First up was the approval of the minutes of the previous meeting.

  • Quotation for winter sand was accepted. Valentino Trucking will provide the service.
  • Hydrant flushing and updates were approved.
  • Motion to support Trent Lakes municipality in regards to OHIP eye care was carried. No discussion as to what that involves.
  • Accounts for payment, including debit orders and payroll were all approved.

Committee of the whole portion started with the Treasurer report for the last nine months. No discussion followed.

  • Community Economic Development Managers report highlighted the North Shore Murals project.Q R codes are being attached to all the art works and will form the basis for an interactive outdoor walk around gallery. The discovery centre storage car update needs to be done before winter sets in to avoid delays in the spring opening. Trail construction has been renegotiated and final section is scheduled to be be complete in a few weeks. The Splash pad equipment is arriving and ground work has been started for next years opening. The fitness centre has reopened after extensive renovations.
  • Additional funds to rework drainage basin at the splash pad has been approved along with signage improvements.
  • Recreation programmer report highlights the Parks Canada agreement and concerns over location of some of the programmes. The concession stand at the arena is still up for tender. There is a lack of interest in any operators stepping up to fill that contract. It seems that over regulation is killing any interested parties as the profit to cost ratio is very low and the risk to any potential operator is quite high.
  • By law officer report had no discussion.
  • Occupational health and safety report met with no feedback.
  • Senior centre report Included the closing of the season for the summer barbecues. Activities in the municipal complex will re commence in the coming weeks including pickle ball and quilting. Membership renewals will begin in November for 2022.
  • Recreation festival committee report mentioned the problems with the outdoor screen for the drive in movie event and also has a tentative schedule for the 2022 upcoming heritage days.
  • A day for truth and reconciliation involving Pays Plat first nation is being talked about which will coincide with the summer festival.
  • Science North Ontario Road show wants to hold an event as part of a tour they are developing.
  • Director of Operations report suggests that the Superior propane contract be renewed for the season and will end in November of 2022. Energy costs have increased quite a bit from this time last year.

Under Communications nothing new was deemed supportable.

Unfinished business included an update on the recent meeting between EMS services chief and both the townships of Schreiber and Terrace Bay. This was a closed meeting and there was no public input allowed. Only delegates from the councils were invited to attend and the presentation revealed no new information so this issue of emergency medical services remains unresolved.
