The Municipality of Eastern Charlotte recently held a regular council meeting for the month of February 2024 at Magaguadavic Place in St. George, NB to address a range of topics under both old and new business, as well as to hear public presentations and community concerns.

Under old business, council delved into matters concerning the New Brunswick Municipal Finance Corporation debentures, Project Village development agreements, utility reserves for Blacks Harbour Public Works, and letters to the government of New Brunswick on various community matters.

The meeting also saw council addressing new business, including a request for a traffic study for two intersections in St. George. The discussion on the municipal logo was a significant step in establishing a cohesive visual identity for Eastern Charlotte, marking a milestone in the municipality's branding efforts.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the public presentations segment, where community members had the opportunity to address the council on matters of municipal jurisdiction. Residents raised concerns about the maintenance of the mosaic gates at the river trail and the viewing area at the fish ladder, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting unique community assets.

Council members responded to these public concerns with a commitment to address the maintenance issues and explore opportunities to enhance community amenities. Council also approved a donation towards the Anglophone South School District's annual Inspire Awards.

Councillors took the opportunity to express their dedication to serving the community and addressing residents' needs. They highlighted ongoing projects, such as the Habitat for Humanity initiative, aimed at improving housing accessibility in Eastern Charlotte. The formation of an age-friendly communities committee, led by dedicated volunteers like Joan Craig, showcased the municipality's commitment to creating inclusive environments for all residents. Councillor Adam Hatt also made a public note that the water quality in the Blacks Harbour area is still poor, which he says is unacceptable.
