More than 25 Barrie residents spoke before the city council on Wednesday, presenting arguments for and against two multimillion-dollar projects: a sports field and an extension to the Southshore Centre.

The proposed multipurpose, 1,500-square-meter sports field, which includes a parade ground, features premium synthetic turf and carries a price tag of over four million dollars. The construction is expected to take approximately a year and a half.

The second project involves a 600-square-meter addition to the Southshore Centre, intended as a new home for the Sea Cadets, with an estimated cost of $4.55 million.

Proponents of the projects emphasized the benefits of the multipurpose field for community unity, youth development, and economic growth. They highlighted the potential economic boost and increased tourism from hosting sports events on the waterfront.

Critics, however, voiced concerns about the lack of public consultation and the environmental impacts, including habitat destruction and pollution. They also opposed the field's location, advocating for alternative sites to preserve natural spaces and ensure historical land safety.
