Black Cultural Centre in Nova Scotia Warms Up For Major Expansion
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia — The Black Cultural Centre, a cornerstone of African Nova Scotian heritage and history, has announced an ambitious expansion project aimed at doubling its current size. This $40 million project promises to enhance the centre's capacity to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural legacy of one of Canada’s oldest Black communities.
Founded in 1983, the Black Cultural Centre is situated in Cherry Brook, one of the four Black communities in Preston Township, east of Dartmouth. It stands as the first and largest museum in Canada dedicated to Black history, offering a deep dive into the stories and contributions of African Nova Scotians.
The expansion plans include a state-of-the-art 300-seat community amphitheatre, which will enable the centre to host larger events and performances, and an extensive facility upgrade to accommodate more museum collections and artifacts. Additionally, the centre will introduce innovative spaces such as a multipurpose theatre with professional acoustics and a commercial kitchen for community gatherings and training programs.
Russell Gross, the current executive director of the Black Cultural Centre, shared his excitement about the project. "We are thrilled to embark on this journey to expand our facility. This initiative is not just about growing our physical space but about enriching the cultural and educational experiences we offer to the community," Gross said.
The centre has evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of the community. It now serves as a provincial and national hub, promoting Black history through various programs and initiatives. The expansion will also focus on modernizing the current building to make it more welcoming and reflective of contemporary needs, ensuring it remains an essential resource for future generations.
In addition to its physical expansion, the centre is actively embracing new technologies to engage younger audiences. Plans include leveraging social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, as well as incorporating virtual reality into their educational programs.
Gross emphasized the importance of preserving and accurately representing Black history. "It's crucial that our community captures its history effectively. We aim to create a knowledge hub that supports genealogy research and documents the significant migrations and stories of African Nova Scotians," he added.
The Black Cultural Centre's efforts to combat misinformation and promote diversity and inclusion have also been a significant focus. Recently, the centre collaborated with the Government of Canada to address misinformation and hate crimes online, ensuring that the legacy of African Nova Scotians is preserved and shared accurately.
Community support will be vital for the success of this expansion project. The centre is calling on individuals, organizations, and corporations to contribute through donations, volunteering, and advocacy. "We believe that with collective effort, this expansion can become a reality. The Black Cultural Centre is more than a museum; it's a place where community and history come together to create change," Gross stated.
The expanded Black Cultural Centre aims to open its doors with a renewed mission to serve as a beacon of cultural heritage and community strength, continuing to tell the important stories of African Nova Scotians for generations to come.
