During the May 13 committee-of-the-whole session of Richmond Municipal Council, several issues were discussed.
District 5 Councillor Brent Sampson brought up new rules for all-terrain vehicles, then the council confirmed the successful bidder for the former West Richmond Education Centre school building in Evanston.
During the presentations portion, Gina MacDonald with Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health, asked council for operational funding, and then Lesa McHugh, with Re-nest Furniture Society, asked for volunteers and those who own trucks to help move furniture for those without homes.
Municipal staff asked permission to trim vegetation during No Mow May, citing safety concerns. The councillor talked about the current municipal policy limiting streetlight installation on public roads with four or more permanent residents.
Interim Chief Financial Officer Jim Davis recommended a $9,200 grant for the River Roots Market Garden Society in River Bourgeois.
Warden Amanda Mombourquette said the 019 Municipal Profile and Financial Conditions Indicators Results were good news for Richmond County.
Provincial parks around the region have opened for the season, including Battery Park in St. Peter’s, Salsman Park in Country, as well as Boylston Park and Whycocomagh Park.
However, there is only one lane open on the road leading to Lennox Passage Provincial Park in Martinique and the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables does not have a timetable for when the second lane will be constructed.
Grade 11 students in the Strait Regional Centre for Education were awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medals.
The award is given to students who have demonstrated leadership and service in the school and community, as well as commendable performances in their courses.
At a ceremony held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre on May 22, Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, presented the medals to Richmond Academy students Emily Grimes and Blake Tanner, as well as SAERC students Ella Ann Bartlett and Chloe Michelle Phillips.
The Strait Regional Centre for Education honoured retirees during its annual Celebrating Service Retirement Banquet held on May 24.
