Council members paid tribute to the survivors, emphasizing their enduring spirit and contributions to the community. The council stressed the importance of remembering and honouring the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples, reinforcing the commitment to reconciliation and support.

Recent statistics estimate that over 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools, with thousands of survivors still among us today. The recent discovery of unmarked graves at former residential school sites has reverberated throughout the country, bringing to light the painful legacy of these institutions and the ongoing impact on Indigenous communities. The council reiterated the importance of acknowledging this history and supporting survivors in their healing journey.

The session also celebrated NewWest Pride, set to take place from August 9th to 16th, with various events planned to promote inclusivity, love, and acceptance. The council discussed the significance of Pride celebrations in fostering a welcoming environment for all residents, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Councillor Nadine Nakagawa closed the recognition section of the meeting with a poignant remark: “I think this celebration of beauty, love and appreciation is so valuable every day, but now it feels we need it more than ever.” Her words encapsulated the day's spirit, reflecting a community dedicated to unity, resilience, and pride.
