This second in a series of tips and tricks looks at ways New Westminster residents can beat the heat and stay safe. First and foremost, staying hydrated is essential. Carry a water bottle and drink regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Hydration helps regulate body temperature and prevents heat-related illnesses. 

Wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing can significantly improve comfort by allowing the body to cool more efficiently. Additionally, using fans strategically to circulate air and keeping blinds closed during peak sun hours can help reduce indoor temperatures.

The City of New Westminster offers cooling centers for residents during extreme heat warnings. These centers, at The Anvil Center, New Westminster Library, Century House and the new aquatic center can provide a safe and cool environment for those who need relief from the heat. In addition to these tips, MLA Jennifer Whiteside recently announced the expansion of the air conditioner program in British Columbia. “We recognize the growing challenges posed by climate change and extreme heat events. The expanded air conditioner program will ensure more vulnerable residents have access to cooling solutions,” Whiteside stated. This initiative aims to provide subsidized air conditioning units to low-income households, seniors, and those with medical conditions exacerbated by the heat.
