City Council Meeting Recap: Childcare Solutions for Parents and Providers
At the August 26th meeting, New Westminster City Council took significant steps to enhance the Walking School Bus program and received an important presentation on childcare support services from the YMCA Childcare Resource and Referral (CCRR) program.
The council revisited the proposal to broaden the Walking School Bus program, initially introduced during the June meeting. This initiative, designed to ensure that children safely walk to school under the supervision of trained volunteers, is a key part of the city's efforts to promote safe and active transportation for students. During the meeting, council members explored various strategies to increase funding and expand the program's reach, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering a safer, more active community for young residents.
In addition to discussions on the Walking School Bus program, the council received a detailed presentation from the YMCA Childcare Resource and Referral program, highlighting the escalating demand for childcare support in the region. The YMCA CCRR emphasized the various ways they assist parents, childcare providers, and industry professionals through resources, training, and networking opportunities. This support is becoming increasingly essential as the demand for quality childcare surges across British Columbia. Recent studies indicate that over 40% of parents in the province struggle to find adequate childcare, underscoring the importance of the services provided by the YMCA CCRR.
During the presentation, Councillor Ruby Campbell expressed heartfelt gratitude, acknowledging the challenges faced by those involved in childcare. "Childcare is difficult. Whether you are a childcare provider, a parent, or working in the industry. So thank you for all that you do," she stated, recognizing the invaluable contributions of the YMCA CCRR and the broader childcare community.
Residents are encouraged to learn more about these initiatives and share their feedback at the upcoming Open House on September 24th at the New Westminster offices at 620 Royal Ave. The council is eager to engage more of the community in these critical discussions and initiatives, hoping to build broader support and awareness around the efforts to enhance child safety and support services in the city.
