U Multicultural has had a significant impact on the community through the civic journalistic content produced, particularly by fostering dialogue on important issues, promoting collaboration, and empowering local voices.
For example, U Multicultural’s work with Healthy Muslim Families in Winnipeg, Manitoba, highlighted the challenges and achievements of the local Muslim community. This project generated great engagement, with many community members actively interacting with the content through comments, likes, and high viewership. By featuring guests like Osama Fazal, project manager, and Humaira Jaleel, the executive director, we were able to create a platform where important discussions about cultural adjustments and building supportive networks could take place.
One particularly inspiring story was that of Amna Iqbal, co-founder of Healthy Muslim Families, who shared her journey from Pakistan to Canada. Her story resonated with many viewers, as it highlighted the struggles and triumphs of immigrants adapting to a new culture.
We also featured Ramzi Zaid, president of the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba, who helped bring attention to Palestinian-Canadian issues, and Jafar Iqbal, a promising young leader studying accounting at the University of Manitoba. These stories not only sparked important conversations but also helped bridge gaps between different groups within the population.
In terms of production, U Multicultural helped a diverse team, including hosts like Marium Fatima, Fareedah Ibitoye, Ibrahim Akhtar, and Danyal Jaleel, gain hands-on experience in media production. Initially, none of them had production experience, but through U Multicultural’s training and guidance, they were able to master their roles and work cohesively as a team. By the third session, the team was executing their tasks confidently and effectively, demonstrating the tangible value of the training we provide.
Overall, this civic journalism initiative has broken down barriers, encouraged dialogue between different groups, and strengthened community ties, showing how important inclusive media can be for civic life and growth.

LJI Impact is the section of commediaportal.ca where the journalists and their organizations participating in CACTUS' Local Journalism Initiative can share their greatest successes.
Through the written stories, photos and videos you see in the LJI Impact section, you'll be able to read first hand accounts about how the presence of a community journalist is making a difference in communities across Canada through the Local Journalism Initiative and the Community Media Portal.
The Community Media Portal is a gateway to the audio-visual media created by community media centres across Canada. These include traditional community TV and radio stations, as well as online and new media production centres.
Community media are not-for-profit production hubs owned and operated by the communities they serve, established both to provide local content and reflection for their communities, as well as media training and access for ordinary citizens to the latest tools of media production, whether traditional TV and radio, social and online media, virtual reality, augmented reality or video games.
The Community Media Portal has been funded by the Local Journalism Initiative (the LJI) of the Department of Canadian Heritage, and administered by the Canadian Association of Community Television Users and Stations (CACTUS) in association with the Fédération des télévisions communautaires autonomes du Québec (the Fédération). Under the LJI, over 100 journalists have been placed in underserved communities and asked to produce civic content that underpins Canadian democratic life.
