Honoring Service and Resilience: Perry Colley's Journey in the Royal Canadian Navy

In this special Remembrance Day episode of Community Update, we honor veteran Perry Colley, who served 38 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring in 2014. Reflecting on his career, Colley shared a mix of pride and challenges, recalling that he faced racism early on in his service. Yet, he found purpose in confronting these difficulties. “You don’t just walk away," he said. "You stick it out, hoping you’re making it easier for the next generation."

Colley highlighted the grounding effect of his family, particularly during challenging deployments. "When you're stationed somewhere far away, being able to see family and share experiences kept me going," he said. He explained how his roots in East Preston gave him strength, especially when stationed on large bases where he was often the only Black person. “It was hard," he admitted, "but family, community—they gave me purpose."

Remembrance Day holds deep meaning for Colley, especially as he learned about Black pioneers like William Hall and the No. 2 Construction Battalion. “These men wanted to fight for a country that didn’t want them, to prove they were worthy,” he reflected. What began as a required military observance grew into a personal tribute to those who fought despite facing discrimination.

For Colley, wearing his uniform on Remembrance Day is a symbol of respect and gratitude for those who paved the way. “It’s about honoring those who served before me," he shared, "especially those who faced so much more.
