During last week’s City Council and General Committee meetings at Barrie City Hall, Mayor Alex Nuttall recognized local artist Gerlin Hasselman, whose piece, “A Barrie Christmas Wonderland,” won the 2024 Mayor’s Christmas Card Contest. Council members and attendees applauded Hasselman’s work, which will appear on the official card distributed by the City.

The council meeting also marked a transition in the City’s student mayor program. Outgoing student mayor, Mateo Gordon from Trillium Woods Elementary School, reflected on his term and expressed gratitude for the experience. Gordon highlighted initiatives discussed during his tenure, including the coming Lakehead University STEM Hub, as a promising opportunity for Barrie’s future students. Following his remarks, incoming student mayor, Nyla Francis of Codrington Public School, was sworn into office.

In terms of municipal governance, the Council unanimously approved the 2025 business plan and budget. The plan features a 0% operational increase while supporting strong infrastructure projects aimed at meeting long-term community growth needs.

The Council also gave unanimous approval to the Lakehead University STEM Hub proposal. The education and innovation center, slated to open in fall 2026 at the downtown Transit Terminal, will start with 200 students and expand to 800 within five years. Officials view the hub as a key resource for hands-on learning, research opportunities, and economic development in Barrie.

Additionally, councilors announced two upcoming community events. Outdoor rinks, including one at City Hall, are scheduled to open on December 21, weather permitting. On December 31, the City Hall area will host the annual New Year’s Countdown with family activities and fireworks.
