New West's Cultural Kaleidoscope: Council Reflects on Inclusivity
The Community Advisory Committee's recent presentation to New Westminster City Council emphasized the need for more inclusive city-wide celebrations to better reflect the city's diverse population, with Mayor Johnstone highlighting the importance of embracing these changes.
At Monday's New Westminster City Council meeting, the Community Advisory Assembly (CAA) presented its inaugural recommendations on enhancing inclusivity in city-wide celebrations. Maria Nguyen, a member of the CAA, emphasized the importance of reflecting the city's diverse cultural landscape in public events.

"Our community's strength lies in its diversity," Nguyen stated. "By ensuring our celebrations are inclusive, we foster a sense of belonging among all residents."
The CAA, established in January 2024 as a pilot project, comprises 36 residents selected to mirror the city's demographic profile. This initiative aims to provide a platform for community members to advise the city on policies and projects impacting residents.
New Westminster's population is notably diverse. According to the 2021 Census, 46.8% of residents identify as part of a visible minority, with significant South Asian, Filipino, and Chinese communities. Additionally, 3.1% identify as Indigenous. The city's commitment to inclusivity is further reflected in the CAA's composition, which closely mirrors these demographics.
Other municipalities have successfully implemented similar advisory bodies. For instance, Surrey's Diversity Advisory Committee has been instrumental in organizing events like the Fusion Festival, celebrating multiculturalism and fostering community engagement. These initiatives have been well-received, enhancing civic pride and unity.
Mayor Patrick Johnstone expressed strong support for the CAA's recommendations. "New Westminster is evolving, and it's vital we embrace that change," he remarked. "Our diversity is our strength. Recognizing and celebrating these shifts will help us build a more inclusive and vibrant community for everyone."
The council is expected to deliberate on the CAA's recommendations in upcoming sessions, with the aim of implementing strategies that ensure city events are reflective of and accessible to all cultural groups within New Westminster.
