At the March 10th New Westminster City Council meeting, Councillor Daniel Fontaine proposed that the city send a letter to the province advocating for a new high school in Queensborough, highlighting the area's rapid growth and the need for local educational facilities. This proposal was not supported by the local school board and ultimately was turned down by council.

Additionally, the council discussed a proposed amendment to extend patio hours for local pubs. This would only include two pubs currently, but as one of these pubs was owned by Councillor Paul Minhas he excused himself from the voting. It was noted that the initiator of this proposal was not specified, but it passed unanimously. This initiative aims to support local businesses and enhance the city's nightlife.

In a significant development, the city announced a $1.4 million federal grant to bolster New Westminster's Crisis Response Pilot Project, aiming to improve mental health and emergency services amidst the ongoing challenges faced by British Columbia residents. Mayor Patrick Johnstone expressed optimism about the grant's impact, stating, "This funding is a crucial step toward enhancing our community's support systems and ensuring timely assistance for those in need."

Though this grant will not cover all of the costs associated with this ground-breaking new program, it was noted in council that the majority of costs to get it off the ground will be provided. This will greatly increase its chance for success, many at council commented. The project is the first of its kind in British Columbia.
