This week on News & Views, we take you to Arden’s Crocus Festival—the first local festival of the summer season—and share a very special presentation to beloved local leader and longtime volunteer, Dave Bennet.

Senator Marilou McPhedran returned to her hometown of Neepawa to present Bennet with the King Charles III Coronation Medal for community service. Bennet, once McPhedran’s teacher at Neepawa Collegiate, was recognized for his decades of service and dedication to the community.

“These medals are meant to recognize that the real difference-makers in people’s day-to-day lives aren’t always elected officials,” said McPhedran, “but the people in our communities who give of themselves to make life better for others.”

A dedicated Rotarian—part of what McPhedran called the largest volunteer organization in the world—Bennet has also generously given his time to youth and adult sports as a coach, referee, and more.

“I don’t wait for somebody to ask me to do something,” Bennet said upon receiving the award. “I decide what I want to do, and I go ask them if I can.” More often than not, the answer is yes.

Also in this week’s show: the seniors’ residence Kinsmen Kourts II held a drive-thru fundraiser to support the family of high school student Sammy Uyaivato, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. At the time NACTV visited the event, early in the lunch hour, nearly 200 meals had already been served, and the fundraiser was well on its way to raising thousands for the family. Sammy’s great-uncle, John Anderson, is a resident at the facility.
