MADD Charlotte County Launches Crash Car Awareness Campaign
MADD Charlotte County has launched a Crash Car Awareness Campaign that will run throughout the month of June. The initiative places wrecked vehicles from impaired driving incidents in public spaces as a stark, visual reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence.
Jordan Holmes, Vice President of MADD Charlotte County, joined Vicki Hogarth on CHCO-TV’s Southwest Magazine to talk about the campaign, which aligns with broader national efforts. “It’s more or less a loose national campaign that MADD Canada has invited chapters to put on,” Holmes explained. “We decided we’re going to participate this year.”
The campaign will feature crash vehicles displayed in high-traffic areas around the region, including St. George, St. Stephen, and potentially St. Andrews. “We’ve got one in St. George... and then we have one arranged for St. Stephen,” Holmes said. “It’s going to be located closer to the road in the parking lot there.” Locations were chosen for maximum visibility, aiming to reach daily commuters and community members with a powerful message.
Holmes also shared his personal connection to the cause. “I was a victim of impaired driving almost 10 years ago,” he said. “It’s always been that thought about why this happened and how this could have been avoided.” His experience brings a deeper, emotional dimension to the campaign, framing it not just as public education but as a community reckoning with preventable harm.
To emphasize the urgency, Holmes also pointed to national statistics. “We have something like—over the last five or so years—maybe an average of about 70 to 80,000 cases per year,” he said, citing Statistics Canada. That averages out to more than 200 impaired driving incidents every single day across the country.
