Building a Culture of Peace Beyond Gun

The tragic New Year’s Eve shootings in Halifax that claimed the lives of 40-year-old Cora-Lee Smith, her father Bradford Downey, and Smith’s partner Matthew Costain have left the community reeling and grappling with the devastating realities of intimate partner violence and gun violence. This heartbreaking incident has reignited crucial conversations about safety, support systems, and preventive measures for vulnerable individuals.

In a timely interview recorded in our studio, Jessica Bowden, founder of Teens Now Talk and a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, spoke with Community Update about her organization’s ongoing efforts to combat violence through education, mentorship, and creative expression. “We need to empower our young people with the tools to resolve conflicts peacefully and foster a culture of compassion,” Bowden emphasized.  

Bowden highlighted her organization’s initiative aimed at fostering nonviolence and connection among youth. Featuring messages such as “Lay Down Those Arms, Raise Up These Arms,” the initiative uses clothing and goodie bags to promote positive messaging. “It’s about choosing life and solidarity over violence,” Bowden explained.  

Through collaborations with local schools and community groups, Teens Now Talk organizes workshops and events designed to nurture empathy and provide youth with meaningful platforms for expression. Bowden’s call to action resonates strongly, urging collective efforts to address violence at its roots.
