Fundraiser to Keep Children Warm This Winter a Massive "Success" - Good Morning from Rockland #8

In this week's episode of "Good Morning from Rockland" the new, weekly breakfast show by TVC22 host Thomas Stockting provides a news round up including:

COVID-19 UPDATE AS CASES RISE

Earlier this week Ontario’s Provincial Government continued it’s reopening plan, further loosening restrictions however there has been some backlash to the decision as cases are on the rise across the country.

Fortunately though, closer to home things still seem to be going well. At the time of recording there was an increase of three active cases in the United Counties from last week, taking us up to 12. In Clarence-Rockland the active cases stay the same with 3 despite new cases being reported at Rockland Public School and the 7-day rolling average is down to 7.7.

TVC22 have contacted the school and confirmed that there isn’t an active outbreak although we are still awaiting news from the EOHU to determine how many cases there were in the school and their source.

CITY COUNCIL ROUNDUP

In August, the city of Clarence-Rockland suffered a major water main break on avenue Du Parc, leading to the water tower on St-Joseph Street to be completely empty and weeks of enforced road works.

The City worked quickly and efficiently to resolve the issue and this Monday, the local Council asked the administration if there was any way to mitigate the risk of such an incident happening again; this clip is in french and if you need a translation you can contact the City staff. Council also voted in favour of funding 20,000 dollars worth of work on two private properties due to the erosion of creek banks and side slopes along the natural creek off baseline road.

The City had previously denied the property owners requests due to it being private land but, information revealed through a study conducted by South Nation Conservation led Councilors to change their mind, although Councilor Choiniere held some reservation over creating a precedent.

SNOWSUIT CAMPAIGN

Things were looking a little bit “Frosty” at Gab’s restaurant this past Wednesday, as paint night hosted by Judith Simard saw friends and patrons painting snowmen together. Aside from the fun and sense of community paint nights bring, what made this paint night special was that a part of the proceeds went to the Snowsuit Campaign, a fundraiser put on by the Rockland Family centre, which aims to provide warm clothes to children most in need for the coming winter.

Also participating in the night’s activities was Judith Gour, Executive Director of GroupeAction, the organization that oversees programs hosted by the Rockland family Centre. We were able to Judith how the campaign works, and why the programs at the Rockland Family Centre are important for the community.

GHOSTBURSTERS RAISE MONEY

More than 1600 fires burning nearly 8700 square kilometers ravaged British Columbia this year and, although it may be far from home for the local residents here, it doesn’t mean there is no aid.
Thanks to the efforts of the Clarence-Rockland Ghostbusters of upper Canada, and their frequent collaborator The Firefighting Ghostbuster, Chris Farmer, over one thousand dollars was raised for the Canadian Red Cross that will go towards the victims of the forest fires out west.

As part of the group’s mandate to help community groups and those in need, they felt compelled to do their part in helping the communities, “While they don't have the means to physically send their members out to BC to help, they felt this is how they could help from here.”
The individual pictured in the photo is Victoria Dennings, a representative of the Canadian Red Cross office in Ottawa.

Soon they will be doing another fundraiser for the Redcross, and are in talks with Victoria on how they can help the victims of the BC floods.

UCPR HESITATE TO JOIN CLIMATE ACTION GROUP

Looking at climate change action closer to home, an Action on climate change group made a presentation to the United Counties to try and convince them to join their Partners for Climate Protection followed by the development and implementation of a Climate Action Plan in the next couple of years.

Although the Council all agreed that work needed to be done the Mayors weren’t all in agreement as to how to go about it, but didn’t think it was up to the United Counties to tell each municipality what to do.

BRAUWERK HOFFMAN CELEBRATE ONE YEAR

Viewers may recall about this time last year I went down to meet two local businessmen who were realizing their dreams of opening a brewery.
Well fast forward 12 months and Brawuerk Hoffman are celebrating their one year anniversary with a packed weekend full of franco-ontarien forward events and I went down to speak to co-owners Eric Mainville and Olivier Lemay to find out how this topsy turvy year has been for them and get some advice for hesitant entrepreneurs to be.
