In Southwest New Brunswick, Act 3 Productions Puts Age at Center Stage — and in the Spotlight

In the seaside communities of Southwest New Brunswick, a local theatre company is challenging expectations around aging — not by hiding it, but by celebrating it.

Act 3 Productions, a community theatre ensemble for performers aged 50 and over, is redefining what it means to take the stage later in life. Founded by Jo-Anne MacDonald, a lifelong performer, the company offers older adults the opportunity to play dynamic, complex roles — far beyond the familiar “grandparent” stereotypes still common in mainstream theatre.

Their latest production, Encore, is a high-energy blend of Broadway show tunes and operatic arias. Featuring a cast of 26 and a live four-piece band, it’s an ambitious and heartfelt tribute to the enduring power of creativity. For MacDonald, the journey began in the most personal of ways. “This started in my living room,” she recalled. “I just wanted to have a reunion. I found one person’s number, they had someone else’s, and before I knew it, there were 15 of us gathered and singing again.”

That spontaneous gathering became the foundation for what is now one of the region’s most vibrant and inclusive theatre companies, built not only on talent but on community.

Rehearsals Rooted in Community

The company’s grassroots spirit was on full display in a recent segment of Good Day from the Bay on CHCO-TV. Co-host Jonathan Brittain described Act 3 Productions as “a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose.”

Rehearsals are held wherever space allows — community centres, church basements, borrowed halls — and the energy is unmistakable. According to co-host Vicki Hogarth, “They are fueled by joy and a deep love of theatre. Every performance feels like a community celebration.”

For some cast members, it’s a return to a long-lost passion. For others, it’s their first time in the spotlight. In either case, the result is electric — a testament to the richness of lived experience expressed through art.
