A Hand Up, Not a Handout: Habitat Neepawa Selects First Family for Homeownership
Habitat for Humanity Neepawa Selects First-Ever Partner Family
NACTV recently sat down with Donald Walmsley of the Habitat for Humanity Neepawa Chapter to learn more about the organization’s exciting progress and its vision for the future. One major highlight: the announcement of their very first partner family — a milestone moment for the chapter and the broader community.
At a recent community meeting, the Neepawa Chapter proudly introduced the family selected to partner on their first-ever home build. Walmsley, a member of the family selection committee, described the process as both thorough and inspiring.
“We had a number of applicants, and going through the process was really interesting—especially since it was our first time,” said Walmsley. “We received tremendous help from Habitat for Humanity Manitoba. They were very supportive and helped us clarify each step.”
Walmsley explained that the selection process goes well beyond the initial application. “We look at references, income verification, the applicant’s current living situation, and their debt load. It’s a comprehensive look at each family’s circumstances.”
He emphasized that the program is not about charity, but opportunity. “This is not a gift,” he said. “The family selected has earned this. They’ve worked hard, maintained financial responsibility, and kept their debt low. Even so, like many families, they were still not in a position to make a traditional down payment on a home.”
Habitat for Humanity exists to bridge that gap — supporting families who are doing everything right but remain locked out of homeownership due to systemic financial barriers. “The chosen family truly deserves it based on their effort and commitment,” Walmsley added.
As the local chapter gears up for its first build, they’re calling on the Neepawa community to get involved. Volunteers are needed for both the construction phase and for fundraising initiatives. Whether it’s swinging a hammer or organizing a community event, every contribution helps move the project forward.
The organization also took the opportunity to dispel a common misconception: Habitat for Humanity homes are not free. Partner families pay for their homes through a no-interest mortgage with no down payment, making homeownership more accessible — particularly for first-time buyers and newcomers to Canada.
“This is affordable housing for working families — a hand up, not a handout,” said Walmsley.
