"I see you": Federal Minister Saks’s Visit to Barrie's Gilbert Centre Amid Rising Opioid Crisis

On International Overdose Awareness Day, the Gilbert Centre in Barrie welcomed a special visitor: Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. This visit on Thursday comes after Barrie has come under scrutiny at a national level, following the City Council move that attempted to make it illegal to distribute items, like food and other essentials, on public property.

Saks engaged with staff members to understand their roles better and to discuss the community's needs.

Champagne Thomson, the senior manager of community outreach and fundraising at the Gilbert Centre, guided the minister through the facility. Together, they discussed everything from where supplies are sourced to the daily operations. 

As they walked and talked, the depth of services offered at the Gilbert Centre was on full display. Whether it's the kitchen that houses high-protein items, which many visitors lack, or the health services, every corner of the centre tells a story of a dedicated team working diligently to serve the community. . 

Moreover, it's not just about tangible services. There's an undercurrent of a sense of belonging. The centre actively seeks to offer a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone, including the LGBTQ+ youth. 

The visit also gave a glimpse into the number of people the centre reaches. With an active Discord server and an increasing demand for in-person services post-pandemic, it's evident the centre's reach is expansive.

After a recent visit to British Columbia, where outreach processes were under review, the minister underscored the significance of the sentiment, "I see you," for those grappling with mental health and addiction challenges.
