ILCS if dedicated to feeding good food to those in need and at the same time, putting a dent in Canada's food waste

Sherry, in her role as a host, engaged in a meaningful conversation with Igor Bjelac, the director of ILCS (Immigrant Link Center Society). ILCS serves as a vital resource, providing nourishment to those in need, including low-income families, immigrants, refugees, and homeless individuals. Their motto, "Food is Life, don't waste Life," reflects their dual mission: feeding the hungry and combating food waste. Igor emphasized that ILCS sources fresh food from major supermarkets like Save-One Food and delivers it to those in need.

Igor shared a poignant anecdote about a woman who, after a month of receiving nutritious food from ILCS, expressed her gratitude to God for daily sustenance. He underscored the distinction between ILCS and traditional food banks, highlighting their commitment to providing healthy fares.

Furthermore, Igor detailed the far-reaching impact of ILCS, explaining how their efforts benefit both the economy and the environment. He noted that many families and individuals now receive daily access to healthy food. In the span of eight years, ILCS has expanded its assistance from 20 to 3,500 families and individuals per day, with operations at 11 locations in the lower mainland of Vancouver.

The three key components of their work, according to Igor, are nutrition, economic stability, and reducing pollution by preventing food waste. ILCS addresses the issue of $50 billion in annual food waste in Canada, and how they redirect those resources to nourish those in need and support local farmers.

Regarding funding, ILCS relies on support from the city, province, and government. They also generate revenue by selling comfort food produced by their charity arm, with 50% of the proceeds allocated to battling hunger and food waste.
Sherry inquired about their outreach methods, and Igor explained that it primarily relies on word-of-mouth and their website.

Igor mentioned that their distribution trucks collect food from major supermarkets, where volunteers first inspect all food and then sort and package it for families and individuals.

Sherry also highlighted Steve, a dedicated volunteer whose journey from homelessness to community engagement fascinated her. Igor praised Steve's unwavering dedication and emphasized their shared passion for helping others.

Melody, one of the volunteers, gave Sherry a tour of the facility, showing how they prepare food and mentioning that their nutritious meals benefit everyone, not just immigrants, everyone can come and receive good food. She noted that 340 volunteers contribute to ILCS's mission.

Sherry had the privilege of interviewing Steve about his life's journey, from homelessness and addiction to recovery. Steve shared the challenges he faced and the importance of treating homeless and addiction-struggling individuals with compassion and support, not indifference. He emphasized the worth of every person and encouraged community involvement.

When asked why Igor considered Steve a hero, Steve humbly downplayed the title and expressed his joy in helping others. He discussed his passion for cooking and the opportunities ILCS provides for all to access nutritious food. Steve encouraged others to volunteer and support their community, stressing the importance of collective action to aid those in need.
