Inspiring the Next Generation of Athletes

Canadian Citizenship Week, observed from May 13th to 19th, 2024, is a profound occasion dedicated to embracing and upholding the cherished values, rights, and obligations inherent in Canadian citizenship. In a city as diverse as Vancouver, where 40% of its residents hail from various corners of the globe, the significance of every citizen's role in shaping our society cannot be overstated. It's a collective responsibility to enrich our communities and make Canada an even more welcoming and vibrant place to call home.

Today, amidst the celebration, we are privileged to host an exceptional individual whose journey embodies the spirit of determination and inspiration. Meet Maryam Salehizadeh, a formidable athlete proudly representing the Canadian Goalball National Team. Maryam's story epitomizes the essence of perseverance and passion as she pursued her dream of donning the iconic maple leaf on the international stage. Her presence serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring athletes, igniting a fire within the hearts of the next generation.

Maryam's journey is a testament to the incredible power of determination and resilience. Born in Iran with a visual impairment that limits her sight to just 5%, she was raised with unwavering belief by her parents who instilled in her the conviction that her potential knew no bounds. Despite her visual challenges, Maryam embraced life with a fierce determination to conquer any obstacle in her path.

Inspired by the unwavering support of her mother and the shared journey with her half-blind brother, Maryam's passion for sports ignited at an early age. Introduced to goalball by her sibling, she discovered a profound love for the game that would shape her future. With relentless dedication, Maryam honed her skills and earned a coveted spot on the Iranian Goalball National Team, a testament to her indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Yet, Maryam's aspirations transcended the boundaries set by her homeland. In a courageous pursuit of greater opportunities and equality, she made the bold decision to immigrate to Canada. Recognizing that in Iran, societal constraints limited women's access to sports, Maryam sought a place where she could pursue her dreams freely and without inhibition.

Maryam also explained the unique nature of goalball, a sport designed specifically for athletes with visual impairments. In goalball, both men and women compete, relying on their sense of hearing as the ball, containing bells, rolls across the court, guiding their movements and gameplay.

Sherry inquired about Maryam's impressive array of achievements, including her numerous medals and cups earned with the Canadian team. Maryam proudly recounted their successes, emphasizing her deep pride as an Iranian-Canadian representing her adopted country on the national stage. She expressed her belief that in representing Canada, she also embodies the spirit of its people, showcasing their resilience and determination.

Her commitment to excellence not only showcases her athletic prowess but also embodies the values of unity and inclusivity that define Canada. Maryam's remarkable achievements serve as a source of pride and unity for all Canadians, inspiring us to embrace diversity and nurture talent.

Maryam's remarkable journey was celebrated by the Canadian government as a testament to the success of both its citizens and immigrants alike.

Sherry underscored the importance of commemorating Maryam's journey by renewing our commitment to fostering a future where every individual has the chance to flourish and enrich Canada's diverse fabric of society.
