John Pottinger, the Handi-Van Board President mentioned that the $30,000 annual grant from the provincial government hasn’t increased for more than two decades and the ridership hasn’t increased since COVID. Due to this financial condition, the Handi-Van Board presented to the Town of Neepawa on August 20th to seek funding from the Town and the other Rural Municipalities and presented the current status of the Handi-Van to the Seniors Consultation with MLA Jodie Byram on September 20th.
In addition to seeking financial support from the provincial government and local municipalities, the Handi-Van Board organized a fundraising event to help cover some of the current operational costs. This initiative was part of their efforts to raise funds and keep the transportation service running smoothly amid the financial challenges posed by unexpected vehicle repairs and rising fuel prices. The fundraising event reflects the board's proactive approach to securing the necessary resources to continue providing essential services to seniors and individuals with disabilities in Neepawa and the surrounding areas.
Karl Snezyk, Reeve of the RM of Rosedale and a Handi-Van Board member shared about his involvement with the Handi-Van and emphasized the urgent need for more funding from the provincial and local government. “I am Karl Snezyk. I am the Reeve of the RM of Rosedale. I’m with the Handi-Van for three years now. I’m a Board member. It’s an awfully great organization that deeply needs a lot of support. It’s something that the Town really really needs. Hopefully, we can keep it all going. Hoping that all the RMs around will help out to keep the Handi-Van going!” said Snezyk.
