Our Story Is One: A Memorial Event on the 40th Anniversary of the Slaughter of 10 Women in Iran of the Baha'i Faith

On 18 June 1983, 10 Baháʼi women were taken to a square in Shiraz, Iran, under the cloak of night. After months of torture and imprisonment, they were mass executed without the knowledge of their families. One was 17, most in their 20s. Their crime was their belief in the Baha'i faith that promotes gender equality — absent and criminalized in Iran — justice and truthfulness. They were hanged one by one, each forced to watch the next woman’s death in a harrowing attempt to coerce them into renouncing their faith. None did.

On October 27, 2023, a Memorial event was put on at Performance Theatre to honour the women killed in this horrific slaughter 40 years ago. It also honoured all women who have contributed to building a better world through their suffering. The title of the event, "Our Story is One", was meant to imply that through unity, oppression can be combatted.

The Baha'i Faith, which originated in the 19th century in Persia, is also present in Canada. The Baha'i Faith is known for its emphasis on the oneness of humanity, unity of all religions, and the promotion of world peace. In Canada, Baha'is are free to practice their faith without discrimination, and the government recognizes their right to do so.

However, the Baha'i community in Iran has faced significant challenges and persecution over the years. The Iranian government does not officially recognize the Baha'i Faith as a legitimate religion and has, at times, subjected Baha'is to discrimination and persecution.

Baha'is in Iran have encountered restrictions on their religious practices, denial of access to higher education, and limitations on employment opportunities. They have also faced instances of violence, harassment, and imprisonment based on their religious beliefs.

Despite these challenges, the Baha'i community in Iran has demonstrated resilience and steadfastness in the face of adversity. Baha'is in Iran continue to practice their faith and contribute to their communities while advocating for their rights.
