PODCAST-Aambe Giigididaa Wiikwemkoong - Let's Talk Wiikwemkoong - Ep.4 with Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane

Aambe Giigididaa Wiikwemkoong - Let's Talk Wiikwemkoong is a talk show brought to you by Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territories' Kerry Assiniwe and FirstTelTV5 (Local Journalism Initiative). It is a bi-weekly show, hosted by Kerry Assiniwe, where we will talk about different issues and stories concerning the Wiikwemkoong community. This is a new venture of connecting with community members, whether living in Wiikwemkoong or elsewhere. This show is a ‘community voice’, and we will be looking for show ideas to highlight the ‘life/lives’ of Wiikwemkoong community members, events, culture, issues/concerns etc.

In this fourth episode, we talk to Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane.  Karen is an Anishinaabe Dancer, Writer, Educator, Artist and Orator from Wiikwemkoong.  The daughter of residential school survivors, Karen is also a PhD scholar in Educational Policy Studies Indigenous People's Education at the University of Alberta, and is an assistant professor at Mount Royal University in the Treaty 7 region.  A lifelong advocate of Indigenous people, and champion for anti-racism, she is currently living in Calgary, but has been home here in Wiikwemkoong since June, working from home, because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Karen shares a few stories of her father with us and the racist attitudes they had to endure generations ago.  She also speaks about decolonization in academia, as well as a discussion on recent events involving the riots at the Capitol Building in the USA under the Trump administration.  We also get a glimpse of her new book "Powwow: A Celebration Through Song and Dance", available now at Amazon.
