The Record Episode 12

In episode 12 of The Record, Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot sits down with Robbie Anderson of Dockside Construction, a company actively engaged in building homes across Richmond County. Anderson provides insights into the company's efforts to construct affordable housing, highlighting their ongoing projects in Johnstown and River Bourgeois.

Dockside Construction, which has garnered significant interest in its housing options via social media, is now planning to expand its operations beyond Richmond County. Anderson confirmed these plans while discussing the growing demand for their homes. He also touched on financing options, noting that while East Coast Credit Union is facilitating the financing process, prospective homeowners can also explore other financial institutions for their needs.

With homes starting at approximately $130,000, Anderson pointed out that these prices are notably lower than the current market value for new homes. He emphasized that Dockside Construction offers a range of price options, depending on the size and specifications of the home, catering to various budget levels.

This episode of *The Record* also covers the recent recognition of Isle Madame as one of four communities to receive the 2024 Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Spirit Award. This prestigious award honours communities that demonstrate exceptional commitment to civic engagement, resident support, and the preservation of their cultural heritage.

Additionally, *The Record* reports on two Richmond County projects that were recently awarded funding through the Age-friendly Communities grant program. The Seniors Take Action Coalition of Richmond County received $24,700 for the Richmond Community in Action project, while the Richmond River Roots Market Garden Society was granted $12,000 for their Richmond Nourishment for Body and Soul initiative.

The episode also covers news about local school funding. Felix Marchand Education Centre in Louisdale has been approved for funding through the new School Advisory Council Innovation Fund. The school will receive financial support for its Rewilding Green Space project, aimed at enhancing outdoor learning and green space for students.

In Port Hawkesbury, upgrades to pedestrian infrastructure are underway. On July 15, the provincial government announced a project that includes the replacement and widening of 1.44 kilometres of sidewalk, the design of accessible pedestrian ramps, the installation of tactile walking surface indicators, the addition of rest areas and benches, and improvements to signage. The total cost of the project is $796,454, with the province and the Town of Port Hawkesbury each contributing $398,227.

Lastly, *The Record* highlights an opportunity for public input on 16 proposed new or expanded wilderness areas and nature reserves across Nova Scotia. The Department of Environment and Climate Change is inviting public feedback until September 20. Among the proposed new designations is the addition of 255 hectares to the Fourchu Coast Wilderness Area, spanning Richmond and Cape Breton counties.
