The City of New Westminster hired two environmental ambassadors this summer to get the word out to the public about the importance of being environmental stewards in their city.

In this video, the ambassadors, Riley Salt and Ella Morrow focus on water conservation in their interview with NewWest.tv's journalist, Susan Millar.

Riley Salt and Ella Morrow have been educating the public about water conservation at various events and places all summer.

They also oversaw the development of a children's Water Conservation Activity Book called 'Spirit of the River' which is chock full of fun things do to, while providing some great learnings for the children, and likely their parents too.

In our conversation, they talk about their work this summer and about the main areas where water is seriously overused and what to do about it; inside the home, it's leaky faucets – the amount of water that is leaked in a short period of time can be quite astonishing, and outside the home, it's lawn watering. The City sponsors the Golden Lawn Awards every year to honour those who have limited or eliminated lawn watering. The contest is still open until October, so send in your lawn photos.

As many people know, fresh water represents only a small fraction of the water on earth, and in our region, because of climate change, it will become a more and more scarce resource as the mountain glaciers melt and precipitation patterns change, so learning to conserve water is a must. The fact is that Canadians are the most flagrant water consumers in the world.
