EverWind Receives Environmental Assessment Approval for Strait of Canso Transmission Line

EverWind Fuels has announced it has received Environmental Assessment Approval from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change for the overhead transmission line that will cross the Strait of Canso.

Mark Stewart, EverWind’s Director of Engagement, spoke with Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot about the development, which the company calls a “major milestone.”

The transmission line will deliver electricity directly from EverWind’s Phase 2 onshore wind farms—located in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough and the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s—to the company’s Point Tupper facility.

According to EverWind, this approval is a critical step forward as the crossing is a key component of their broader project. The line will enable large-scale renewable energy generation and support the decarbonization of heavy industry by producing green hydrogen and ammonia to replace fossil fuels.

“This is a major step forward for renewable energy leadership in Nova Scotia,” said Trent Vichie, EverWind Founder and CEO. “It clears the path for our Phase 2 wind projects in Guysborough County and brings us closer to delivering clean energy to global markets while creating good jobs and long-term benefits for Nova Scotians.”

Next, the company is preparing to register its Phase 2 wind farms for environmental assessment—beginning with Wind Farm 1 this summer, followed by Wind Farm 2 in late 2025, and Wind Farm 3 in early 2026.

EverWind will return to the community soon to present a revised layout for Wind Farm 1, incorporating updates informed by field studies and community feedback.

Stewart emphasized the importance of local involvement: “We’re grateful for the continued support from local leaders and communities, and we look forward to the conversations ahead. Community input remains at the heart of everything we do—we’re committed to building these projects together.”

EverWind also highlighted the project's potential economic benefits. Construction of the transmission line is expected to create approximately 50 jobs over a six-month period, along with up to four part-time, long-term local roles for operations and maintenance. The project will also generate indirect employment through increased demand for local services such as hospitality, food, and retail.

Overall, EverWind estimates that the project will bring approximately $40 million in investments to Nova Scotia throughout all development phases.
